Re: St Brigid’s Day Lecture 2026
As part of the celebration to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, Pope Leo XV1 gave an important address, at an Ecumenical Prayer Service, at the ancient site of the town of Nicaea, in Turkey. The Pope stated, “Faith in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages… consubstantial with the Father (Nicene Creed) is a profound bond already uniting all Christians. In this sense, to quote Saint Augustine in the ecumenical context, we can also say that, “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one” (Exposition on Psalm 127).
This year, The St Brigid’s Day Lecture will be given by Fr Tom Layden, S.J. Fr Layden is a Jesuit priest, living and working in Belfast. The theme of his lecture, “The Nicene Creed: A foundation for Ecumenism”, is based on Pope Leo XV1’s address at Nicaea.
The Lecture will be in St Brigid’s Parish Centre, Derryvolgie Avenue, Belfast BT9 6FP, on Sunday 8th February, at 4.00pm.
All welcome.
